Malapo is a well-situated stopover
for visitors who wish to enjoy the many interesting and scenic
attractions that Mpumalanga has to offer. The waterfalls of Sabie,
the historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest, the wild horses of Kaapschehoop
and the quaint village of Dullstroom are easily accessible trips,
while the Kruger National Park and private game reserves are within
easy reach of the lodge.

Experience the brilliance of the Southern Hemisphere night sky as we
introduce you to the heavens above. Join us in the ASTRO Boma (Open
Air Observatory) where African star lore comes alive as you journey
from the moon, to the planets in our neighbourhood and into deep
space. Our guests’ astronomical safari completes an African
Experience by including one of the most magnificent sights that
nature has to offer. South Africa is a world in one country - Malapo
Country Lodge is a pinpoint in the Universe. We have a large
telescope on site and observation sessions take place daily,
permitting the weather is conducive of good clear skies.
Malapo Country Lodge is a professionally operated concern. At this

country hospitality. Being owner managed, guests are assured of
personal dedicated service and attention to detail.
Accommodation
Accommodation a Malapo Country Lodge consists of four well-appointed
cottages, set in manicured gardens. All cottages are individually
decorated and fitted with modern conveniences. A maximum of ten
guests can be accommodated thus ensuring a haven of tranquillity.
Dining:
In the evenings guests can enjoy an aperitif in our convivial pub
followed by a 4-course table d’hôte dinner in our cosy dining room.
Rainbow Trout is abundant in the “Highlands” and a table speciality.
All meals are freshly prepared where meticulous attention is given
to the quality and freshness of the produce. In winter burning a
large wood fire in the pub keeps the cold at bay and enhances the
atmosphere. A group of guests may request dinner to be served in the
thatched lapa, weather permitting, creating the ambience for a true
South African evening.
Activities:
At the lodge guests may relax at
the swimming pool while savouring the peace and beauty of the
gardens. The more energetic may fly-fish for Rainbow trout on two
stillwaters or on the famous Lunsklip River. The flyfishing season
is officially open from April to October.
After dinner our guests join us in the Astro Boma (open air
observatory) where we take them on a guided tour of the Southern
Hemisphere night sky. This stargazing experience is totally unique
and we highly recommend our guests to take part in this activity
during their stay.
Malapo Country Lodge has a beautiful and established garden.
Together with the lake, the garden attracts a variety of bird
species. Bird restaurants (Bird feeders) make photography for bird
watchers a must.
Location:
The lodge is situated 35km from Lydenburg just 500m off the
Bambi/Lydenburg (R36) tar road and is a comfortable 285km from the
Johannesburg International Airport. Nestling in the tranquillity of
the shadows of the Steenkampsberg Mountains that make this a truly
idyllic setting where guests can relax in the serenity of the
countryside. A recommended stay of two nights affords guests an
opportunity to discover this unique area.
Accreditations:
Malapo Country Lodge was accredited
with a four-star lodge rating by The Tourism Grading Council of
South Africa (TGCSA) in November 2002, 2003 and 2004. Malapo Country
Lodge is also featured in the Portfolio Retreats Collection
2005-2006 and has been accredited with a chef’s hat good food
accolade for inspired chefs and cooks who provide sublime food. In
2004, Malapo Country Lodge was a semi-finalist in the AA Travel
awards in the small retreats category.
